Linux and Solaris

Came across an article by Max Bruning [ The Solaris internals Guru ] on differences between Solaris and Linux. Just noting down few points from the detailed article for quick reading later on. For ppl interested in the complete article please refer to http://www.opensolaris.org/os/article/2005-10-14_a_comparison_ of_solaris__linux__and_freebsd_kernels/ Linux ========================================================================= Uses a Virtual File Switch mechanism for abstracting file system details from users Inode is the file system indepent data struct Default local file system is ext3fs .ext3fs is an extent based journalling fs Uses LRU as a page replacement algorithm Uses a pagedaemon called kswapd for page replacement Basic unit of scheduling is task_struct Processes and threads are rep by task_struct A single-threaded process in Linux has a single task_struct Schedul...

MPLS tunnels and LSPs

Consider a LSP . Let us suppose that R1 receives unlabeled packet P, and pushes on its label stack the label to cause it to follow this path, and that this is in fact the Hop-by-hop path. However, let us further suppose that R2 and R3 are not directly connected, but are "neighbors" by virtue of being the endpoints of an LSP tunnel. So the actual sequence of LSRs traversed by P is . When P travels from R1 to R2, it will have a label stack of depth 1. R2, switching on the label, determines that P must enter the tunnel. R2 first replaces the Incoming label with a label that is meaningfulto R3. Then it pushes on a new label. This level 2 label has a value which is meaningful to R21. Switching is done on the level 2 label by R21, R22, R23. R23, which is the penultimate hop in the R2-R3 tunnel, pops the label stack before forwarding the packet to R3. When R3 sees packet P, P has only a level 1 label, having now exited the tunnel. Since R3 is the penultimate hop in P's level...

My article on bigadmin!!

Just before leaving Sun our team submitted a whitepaper on the enhancements in SCM . Its been published and here it is http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/features/articles/container_management.jsp

From SCM to MPLS

Among other transitions, that life's taking me thru ,one is the kind of work i am doing. In my prev company ,I was working on SCM(Solaris Container Manager) .And here i'll be working with Routing solutions for networks. So am studying MPLS,routing algorithms and brushing up SNMP .My new company is called Vegayan systems(www.vegayan.com) and the product we are developing is targetted at ISP's and will be used for intelligent routing and will be dealing with traffic engineering ..
