Unwinding at Matheran...(May 27 2007)

Perhaps it was the wrong time to visit Matheran ,or the mood wasnt just right or for whatsoever reason..
Matheran didnt turn out to be the beautiful place i expected it to be..Guru and I set out at 5.30 am from home and reached Neral by local train at around 8.00 am. Firstly the long queue at Neral station put off our spirits.
The journey by the really slow toy train was just about Ok.Thegood part was that the whole bogey was filled with kids who were super excited with small things that didnt quite as much excite us ..It was good to see them enjoying themselves.Probably Matheran is best visited just after rainy season or at the onset of the rainy reason.Guru was all the time in an imaginative world trying to tell me how the valley might look just after rains and that we shud visit it then. The toy train pulled on really slowly and it was unbearably hot at some places on the route. And it stopped at 3 intermediate stations for aroung 10 mins each ..
We finally reached the dusty town of Matheran where the good thing is that automobiles are banned .But since it was summer ,and there are no tar roads and horses all over the place its very dusty with red mud all over the place..It is definetly cooler once u reach the top of the hill and u feel u're in a different world ..there's one main road road lined with shops selling chikkis, handicrafts ,leather articles .The same road also has a lot of joints where u can eat food and also there are some lodges where u can tent in if u're planning to stay for more than a day.And lots of ghoda walas who'll keep asking u if u need a horse ride to show difft spots around Matheran. In the town u can only commute using horses or hand pulled rickshaws or by walk.
We decided to walk around the place as most of the main places are in walking distance and we were in no hurry ..So after a quick lunch at one of the joints, armed with one of the maps we took off, visitng different places in Matheran..
More later ..I am too bored writing right now and maybe wont complete this blog post ...
